On August 18, 1998 , the wrestling community suffered a terrible loss. Brian Stephen Howser, better known to fans as Shane Shamrock, was the victim of a vicious shooting which ended his life. Brian was the first-ever MCW Light Heavyweight Champion, defeating Mark Shrader, Christian York, Joey Matthews, Earl the Pearl, and Quinn Nash in a Six Way Dance at the Patapsco Arena.  This match was later deemed by the fans to be the 1998 MCW Match of the Year.
Brian was 23 years old. Survived by his parents, George and Sharon Howser, and his 3 children, Berkleigh, Brady, and Emily, Brian remains more than just a distant memory.  To this day, Brian is an inspiration and a role model for anyone interested in entering the wrestling business. So well-respected was he amongst his peers, that MCW pays tribute to this fallen athlete each year.  Once and only once per year, MCW hosts a Six Way Dance comprised of a series of elite competitors in the wrestling world. Recognized as "Brian's Match", this contest has come to be known as the Shane Shamrock Memorial Cup.Two competitors begin the contest with he four remaining competitors stationed at each corner of the ring.  A wrestler may tag anybody at any time.  The match proceeds elimination-style until the last man standing remains.  This individual is recognized as the Shane Shamrock Memorial Cup Champion.
