2008 Inductee into the College Football Hall Of Fame
The First African American World Heavyweight Champion in Professional Wrestling
World Renowned Superstar
Comes To Dundalk On Friday August 7th
Born in Perry, Georgia, Ron Simmons attended Warner Robins High School, where he played American football as a tight end and linebacker. In 1976, he was named lineman of the year, and first team All-State by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Simmons was an All-American football player at Florida State University from 1977-80 under coach Bobby Bowden.
In 1988, Simmons' jersey (number 50) was retired by Florida State University, the third time a number has been retired in FSU history. In addition, Simmons was inducted into the Orange Bowl Hall of Fame for his accomplishments while playing at Florida State University. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
On August 2, 1992 at the Baltimore Arena in Baltimore, MD, a scheduled title match between Sting and WCW World Heavyweight Champion Big Van Vader was cancelled after Jake Roberts injured Sting. WCW President Bill Watts responded by holding a raffle to determine the number one contender. Ron Simmons won the raffle and defeated Vader with a powerslam to win the Championship. By defeating Vader, Simmons became the first ever African American WCW World Heavyweight Champion.
On Friday August 7, 2009 nearly 17 years to the day that history was made and Ron Simmons paved a new road for African Americans in professional wrestling the former World Heavyweight Champion will return to Baltimore one more time. This time Simmons will be teaming with current MCW Heavyweight Champion Ruckus to take on the reigning MCW Tag Team Champions Tyler Hilton and Zachary Shane; The Rehoboth Beach Crew (RBC). What is unique about this match is that all championships will be on the line. If either one of the RBC pins Simmons or Ruckus then whoever scores the pin will become the MCW heavyweight Champion. However, if Simmons or Ruckus pin either one of the RBC they will become the new MCW Tag Team Champions.
Before the event Ron Simmons will be signing autographs and taking pictures with all of the fans. Don’t miss your opportunity to meet and greet the former WCW World Heavyweight Champion.
The event takes place at The New Green room located at 2401 North Point Road in Dundalk, MD 21222 on Friday night August 7, 2009. The event stars at 8:00PM however doors will open at 6:00PM so that fans can have a personal meet and greet with Ron Simmons.
