The month of November ushered Christian York into his 11 th month as reigning MCW Heavyweight Champion, having defeated Joey Mathews on December 26 of last year in Glen Burnie, Md. When December 27 th rolls around and Maryland Championship Wrestling presents “Holiday Hell” at the New Green Room at North Point in Dundalk, York will pass the one year mark as champion as he steps into the squared circle to put his gold on the line against the new number one contender, SugarMask. The unpopular York’s continued ownership of the prestigious MCW title is a sore subject to the Maryland faithful as the result of this past Saturday’s “Monster Mash” did not bode well with the paying crowd.
In what was arguably one of the most highly anticipated matches in MCW history, the despised York, accustomed to wrestling Main Events, successfully defended the MCW Heavyweight Title against the hugely popular member of BLK OUT and hometown hero, Ruckus. Bad blood had been brewing between the two Maryland regulars for quite some time and Ruckus’ quest to gain a title shot peaked this past August at “Summer Heat,” when during a tag team match between York & Mathews and Ruckus & Derek Frazier, Ruckus pinned the champions shoulders to the mat, solidifying his slot as top contender. As fans eagerly awaited the start of Saturday’s event, camera’s caught up with Christian York as he was entering the arena. York harshly criticized his high-flying opponents “Backyard Wrestling” roots, claiming he was nothing more than garbage and unworthy of even being in the ring with a wrestler of his caliber. When bell time came, Ruckus was all business as he awaited the arrival of the champion, whom was lead to the ring by his entourage. In typical York fashion, he cockishly berated ringside fans exchanging insults as he took his time readying himself for the start of the contest. The action was heated as both wrestlers battled back and forth both in and out of the ring jockeying for an advantage. After a lengthy bout that left both men fatigued and despite an array of outside interference on behalf of both competitors, the fighting champion managed to prevail as he quickly grabbed his prized title belt and retreated to his locker room while fans showered him with boo’s. Enraged by the outcome of the match and feeling that the opportunistic York needed help to beat him, Ruckus took the house mic and addressed those in attendance stating that things were far from over between the two. Ruckus demanded a return bout insisting on special stipulations, even mentioning a cage match, insuring that the next time would be one on one. Christian York won the battle, but to Ruckus and the MCW fans, the war is far from over.
Earlier in the card, former five-time MCW Heavyweight Champion, the Bruiser squared off against a mystery opponent of Commissioner Kelly Bell’s choosing. When the music hit, being lead to the ring by Cherry was the masked man known as SugarMask. As instant hit with the fans, the candy man was all business when the match started. The Bruiser, not knowing who his competition would be for the evening had his hands full with the masked man who had familiarized himself with his opponents skill set. With the referee distracted, SugarMask threw a handful of sugar in the face of the Bruiser, temporarily blinding him and allowing him to gain the fall. It was announced prior to the contest that the winner of the match would be granted a title shot at the MCW Heavyweight Title next month at “Holiday Hell.” Backstage after the match, the enraged Bruiser confronted Commissioner Kelly Bell. Demanding answers, he was furious at what just happened and screamed that he knew who was under the mask. Regardless of his pleas, the referee’s decision was final and up next will be Christian York defending the MCW Heavyweight Title against current number one contender, SugarMask.
