CHRISTIAN YORK (champion) vs. JOEY MATTHEWS
MCW’s biggest party of the year will see the biggest revenge match of the year, as MCW officials have announced that new MCW Heavyweight Champion CHRISTIAN YORK, will defend the title against the former champion JOEY MATTHEWS.
For the last year, Creative Control has made Joey Matthews’ life, a living hell. Sneak attacks and unplanned haircuts have only been just a small sample of what Kimberley McDevitt and company have done to Matthews. But the biggest strike occurred at HOLIDAY HOMECOMING, as Kimberley McDevitt made a deal with Matthews’ tag team partner, Christian York. The deal, among other perks, was that should York score the winning pinfall in the tag team main event match, then he would get his title shot, immediately that night. When York made good on his end, McDevitt reciprocated, giving York his title match immediately after the tag match was over.
Matthews was unable to put up a fight, partially due to the tag match, but mainly due to the low blow that Christian York gave just prior to York scoring the winning pinfall. Matthews was in no shape to defend the title, but was forced to do so. And, in less than a minute later, York defeated Matthews in the shortest MCW title match ever.
For, York, this would mark the beginning of his first MCW Heavyweight Championship reign. A reign, he says, will never end. “Joey, Danny, and everyone backstage has been holding me down for a long time,” says the new champion. “I mean, think about it, I should have been champion way before now! I was holding this company together. I was the star of the show. That is, until Joey came back. And MCW just rolls out the red carpet for him. He should have had to work his way to the top, but instead, everything was handed to him on a silver platter. And I was an afterthought.”
“The Fabulous Fabian, give me a break. That wasn't Kim’s idea, that was Danny’s. He told me to say that it was her idea. But it was done to keep me down, and keep the spotlight on Joey. “Fabian” nearly destroyed my career, but I overcame that. At last year’s Holiday Homecoming, I didn't get the 5-star treatment to ensure that I would walk out champion, unlike the treatment Joey got at SHAMROCK VII when he won the title. This year at Holiday Homecoming, I made sure that the same thing didn't happen twice. I wasn't going to wait until Anniversary ’08 to get what should have been mine already. That’s when I made the deal with Kim. I mean, come on, did you really think that something happened to me last November, when I missed the show? That was all Kim. We came up with the plan to throw Joey off. Joey was afraid, because he knew that the Anniversary ’08 title shot was going to me, and there was no way that he was going to beat me. So, we had to deceive him, make him believe that I was loyal to him, keeping his title away from Creative Control. We had to make him believe that Creative Control would do whatever it took to screw me again. Joey never suspected that it was me all along. That, the entire time, this was done to ensure that I get the title. And everything worked out perfectly. I love it when a plan comes together!”
York finally won the big one. But, his title reign could end quickly, as Danny McDevitt announced this week that Joey Matthews exercised his rematch clause, and will get his rematch against new MCW Heavyweight Champion Christian York, at MCW ANNIVERSARY ’08, Sunday, February 24th, 2008, at the MCW Arena at Northpoint in Dundalk, MD.
